I’ve loaded FreePBX 17 and plan to use the OpenPage module. I’m also looking for something that allows me to have PIN numbers that I can allocate to users. These pins will be required for certain extensions to be able to make outbound calls. Basically I have some phones in open areas where I would like to secure outbound calling with PIN numbers. Right now the only thing I can see is PinSet Pro which is a paid module in FreePBX.
Does anyone know if there is another way to achieve this same pin outcome without this paid module? Or a free module maybe somewhere? The 25 year licensing of the Pinset Pro license isn’t too bad which I don’t mind paying but not keen on the annual cost involved on top of the 25 year fee.
I believe extension routes would be what you are looking for, just make an outbound route that has a pin in it above the normal outbound route and choose only the extensions you want to lock down. Just make sure you don’t block 911/933/944 etc! Lol
you can create a list of PINs under settings → pin sets and then just hand out a specific one to each extension user or however you want to distrbute them. Or create an outbound route for each extension? but the PIN they input should show up in CDR reports if you need reporting on it later
That sounds like a good plan. Can I be cheeky and ask for guidance on the steps of setting this up please? I haven’t set up outbound dial plans/routes yet. As I understand it you set a pattern and which extensions the pattern applies to and which trunk to use. I’m quite new to this.
Yes ideally which PIN number was used make a call in the logs will be handy for tracing back if needed to a user
Ahh crap I forgot extension routing module isn’t free! So if that is a big deal maybe it’s not the best way… maybe someone else can comment a better way that I am not thinking of.
Ahhh that’s a shame. Might need to consider the PinSet Pro paid module then? Do you know if I purchase the 25year license am I able to opt out of renewing the yearly update option but keep the paid module going still
The features you’re looking for are in the pinsets module, you don’t need the pro version. Define a pinset with multiple pins, then enable it for the outbound route.
Make sure not to touch your emergency routes, you (probably) need to comply with Kari’s law.
The pro version allowed you to set individual pin codes for each extension/user, and control which outbound route the pin codes were attached to from within that module, and track calling time with some rudimentary reports, kind of like a poor mans call accounting system. I would be interested to know how many administrators still enable pin codes, or just block international. With the trunking cost and Long Distance not being as much of a factor as it once was, do people still utilize PIN codes on their systems?
We aren’t on FreePBX yet in our school district, but with our current PBX, we had PINs in use since before I started. I think originally it was for accounting purposes, but it’s a lot of typing and we just have been telling staff members for a few years they can just dial 9 and the area code and phone number.
